Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport
Sport unites the Netherlands! More than 9.4 million Dutch people exercise every week. Some people have a membership at the gym and other people are a member of a local sports association. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers at more than 26,000 sports associations help us organize the sport in the Netherlands. That makes our sports infrastructure and sports culture unique in the world. And without the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) this is not possible, because they finance our sport to a large extent.
The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport is primarily responsible for public health. Also the welfare policy such as care for the elderly, youth policy and such things belong to this ministry. In addition, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport is therefore also responsible for the policy regarding sport. They do this partly through targeted subsidies on substantive themes such as integration, health and well-being and partly through structural investment in sports infrastructure. Top sport in the Netherlands, such as top coaches and talent coaches, is also partly funded by VWS.
In addition, the central government wants to make it possible for sports federations to bring leading international sports events to the Netherlands. Sporting events inspire others to exercise and to exercise more. And by cheering together for Dutch athletes, the group feeling is growing among all Orange fans. Events try to put cities on the map, stimulate participation in sports, give a boost to the economy and generate feelings of solidarity.
