Hundreds of events around La Vuelta Hollanda next year

Organisation showered with cultural, sporty and celebratory ideas

The start of the Vuelta a España next year in Utrecht and Noord-Brabant will be accompanied by hundreds of sporty, cultural and celebratory activities. In recent months, the organisation of La Vuelta Holanda has received no less than 272 plans from civic organisations, cultural institutions, sports clubs, artists, business organisations and residents. From Spanish festivals and bike tours to murals and educational programmes.

"We're pleasantly surprised. La Vuelta is the talk of the town."

On the 29th of April 2020, the 85th anniversary of the first Vuelta a España, La Vuelta Holanda will kick off the extensive activity programme. There is plenty to do in the 34 villages to be crossed, from April through the stages on the 14th, 15th and 16th of August. "The fact that so many people have come forward shows how involved the organisations and inhabitants of Brabant and Utrecht are," says Martijn van Hulsteijn, director of La Vuelta Holanda. "The creativity is enormous. There's a huge variety. Festivities, history, sports, education, culture. We're pleasantly surprised. La Vuelta is the talk of the town."

The reported plans are very diverse in size, design and scope. A number of examples are: complete Vuelta Festivals in several municipalities to be crossed, various Vuelta-cafés, pub quizzes and cycling festivals, bicycle hubs in the city and province of Utrecht, a theatre performance inspired by La Vuelta, podcasts, the Dutch Para-cycling Championship, a 'plogging' action on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, a Spanish film festival, science blogs about cycling, a bicycle bell orchestra, thick tyre races, a pedalo competition, a Vuelta song, the Dutch Championship cycling quiz and a bicycle construction project in which holders of residence permits are linked to potential employers.

Social impact

A large proportion of the submitted plans receive financial support from the organisation. After all, the social impact of the event is an important element for the organising cities of Breda, Utrecht, 's-Hertogenbosch and the provinces of Utrecht and Noord-Brabant. In order to receive a contribution, the idea must be in line with the themes of La Vuelta Holanda: Fit for the future, Everyone participates, and Care for nature. Reach, feasibility and effect are also important and, of course, the connection with Spain is important. In the coming months, the activities will be listed on the website of La Vuelta Holanda (www.lavueltaholanda.com).

The organisation of La Vuelta Holanda encourages the organisers of the side events to donate any extra proceeds to the charity of La Vuelta Holanda: Het Fonds Gehandicaptensport (The Disabled Sports Fund).
