Grand opening celebration as the start from La Vuelta
With the presentation of the teams La Vuelta has a festive kick-off in Utrecht. The 23 teams presented themselves after a cycling ride though the shopping mall Hoog Catharijne to the Vredenburgplein where the audience is packed together. Then the cyclists made a boat trip at the Singel in front of 12.500 people.
Mayor Sharon Dijksma thanked the Spanish organisation in her speech. “Also on behalf of Den Bosch, Breda, the province of Utrecht and North-Brabant, we would like to thank Unipublic for the trust and the patience.“ Because of the corona pandemic the start of the Vuelta was delayed for two years, it was originally planned for 2020 and finally took place in 2022.
Among the riders there is threefold winner Primoz Roglic and world champion Julian Alaphilippe. Also departing cyclists Aljeandro Valverde and Vincenzo Nibali entertained the audience and particpated in the festivities. Jan Janssen – the first Dutch winnar of La Vuelta – looked ahead to La Vuelta 2022.
Race director Javier Guillén expressed his appreciation: “This is the best presentation we have had. We are looking forward to three beautiful days of cycling.”
