FANTASTIC ATMOSPHERE AT SECOND LA VUELTA STAGE
From the start at the Citadel in 's-Hertogenbosch to the finish in the Utrecht Science Park, the Vuelta peloton was greeted by a huge crowd of cycling fans. It is estimated that 375,000 cycling enthusiasts came to cheer on the riders. Sam Bennett won the stage, Mike Teunissen made sure that the Red Jersey remained in Dutch hands.
In the municipalities passed along the route and on the hills of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, there was a an enormous crowd to cheer on the riders. The Netherlands showed its most sporty side from the start in 's-Hertogenbosch to the finish in Utrecht.
Sharon Dijksma, Mayor of Utrecht: “Today was another iconic day. With 375,000 people along the route, we more than exceeded the expected visitor numbers. The atmosphere around the race was also fantastic. I am proud of everyone who made this possible.”
Sam Bennett defeated Mads Pedersen and Tim Merlier in the expected bunch sprint. The Red Jersey remained in Dutch hands at the Utrecht Science Park. Mike Teunissen took over the lead in the general classification from Robert Gesink. The Red Jersey he was presented with was specially designed for the Dutch stages and combines the arms of Utrecht, Breda and 's-Hertogenbosch and the provinces of Utrecht and North Brabant. More Dutch success was booked for Julius van den Berg, who won the mountain jersey on the Amerongse Berg.
As usual, the classification leaders received a special prize in addition to the leader's jersey. During La Vuelta Holanda, this is a special version of Miffy. This is part of the Disabled Sports Fund, the charity of La Vuelta Holanda.
